International Speedway Facts
Daytona
International Speedway, on the Florida
coast at Daytona Beach, has an advantage
over most tracks in being available year
round for racing events. The track
itself is a tri-oval that sits on a
complex covering 480 acres. The infield
boasts the 44-acre Lake Lloyd. With the
long season and the versatility of the
setting, Daytona International Speedway
has room in its schedule for motorcycle
racing, as well as Historic Sportscar
Racing and other events. Every February
since 1959, this speedway has hosted the
Daytona 500, the first and most exciting
race of the Winston Cup (now Sprint Cup)
racing season, the race where everyone
is on equal footing and has the same
hope of taking home the Cup.
2009 Daytona 500
Winner - Matt Kenseth
|
Matt Kenseth, the former 2003
NASCAR series champion who had
never been in contention at the
Daytona 500, celebrated the
biggest victory of his career in
Sunday's rain-shortened running
of The Great American Race. Rain
hung over Daytona International
Speedway all day Sunday, turning
the season-opening event into a
race against Mother Nature and
after a rain delay and with 48
laps remaining, Matt Kenseth was
named the official 2009 winner
of the Daytona 500. |

Auto Club 500

Auto Club Speedway
Fontana, CA
The Auto
Club 500 is a 500 miles (804.7 km) long
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race
held at the Auto Club Speedway in
Fontana, California. The second race of
the Sprint Cup season and is one of two
races held at the Auto Club Speedway,
the other being the Pepsi 500. |

|
Prior to 2005, the race was held in late April
or early May. When the NASCAR Realignment of
that year was made, the race was moved to
February. Squeezing right in between the Daytona
500 and the Shelby 427 on the NASCAR schedule,
this race has seen some of the biggest names in
NASCAR cruise to the finish line. Matt Kenseth
took it in 2006 and 2007, Greg Biffle in 2005,
and Jeff Gordon in 2004.
This race is for all of the 500 miles and
consists of about 250 laps. Besides having to
contend with other drivers trying their best to
take the lead, each and every driver must
literally have nerves of steel to compete
efficiently in this race.
The Auto Club Speedway has a length of about 2
miles and with a D shaped oval and sharp turns
at 14 degrees, one can see why many a driver
would have some problems navigating the turns at
the bottom half. This race first began in 1997
and ever since then, there have been a few
fatalities on this track as a result of which
certain modifications have taken place here. The
end result is a track that is so easy to drive
fast in but one that certainly starts telling on
the driver after a matter of a few laps. This
track also has an infield road course which has
been used for the other races as well. The track
has a front stretch of about 3100 feet and a
back stretch of about 2500 feet, wrapping the
front end at 11 degrees and the back end at 3
degrees.

With over a 50-years history, the National Association of
Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) has enjoyed a growth in its
prestige, fan base, prize money, importance and devotion.
NASCAR's inaugural season began in 1948 with the first NASCAR-sanctioned
stock car race staged on the Daytona Beach, Fla., road course
on February 15.
The NASCAR Busch Series was added to NASCAR portfolio in 1982
and has earned a well-deserved reputation as a training ground
for future NASCAR Winston Cup stars. Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte,
Dale Jarrett, Ward and Jeff Burton are just a few of the current
regulars who participate. And some drivers even choose to
spend their entire racing careers in the NASCAR series. Today,
two of the top-four attended forms of motorsports in the USA
are NASCAR-sanctioned divisions.
