When the race was started in 1959, it was only 250 miles and scheduled for the morning of July 4. This led to it gaining its original name, the Firecracker 250. In 1963 it was expanded to 400 miles, and with time, it’s moved to being a night race. In 1989, Pepsi became the race’s sponsor. In 2007, Pepsi was dropped for Coca-Cola.
